Under the Willow: Call for Salon Curators (September & December)
Under the Willow seeks submissions from and referral to curators to facilitate our late September and early December Salon events. Candidates can apply for one, or both, of the Salons. Selected candidates may be considered for future Salon in 2017. We also encourage art writers to participate with Under the Willow.
Our first salon was launched in April 2016 to critical acclaim. You can review the insightful essay by Leora Lutz here.
The curated submissions need not reference the collecting focus of our founder nor feature the permanent collection - you have a blank slate to work from.
Salon Curator Responsibilities
Through the Salon event, the curator will contribute to the dialog between high-caliber emerging artists and established and emerging art collectors. Preference is given to curators experienced with new media, including digital video, multiple art media and their ability to interact with the audience. Responsibilities include:
Propose Salon theme and identify all artists
Secure Salon date and artist commitments
Tour Salon space with artists prior to the Salon event
Secure, hang, and test all work at least two weeks prior to Salon event
Create art list with images and descriptions of each work
Contribute industry contacts to Salon guest list
You will not be responsible for managing the space, guest list, food set-up and clean-up, obtaining volunteers. As the space in a private home, you will flexible lead time to hang the show and no time pressure to take down the show by a specified time.
Please submit your application to athompson5@gmail.com. Design briefs, websites, resumes and cover letters are accepted.
About Under the Willow
Under the Willow’s mission is to unlock a passion for collecting art through our immersive salon experiences. We believe that insight about art and art collecting begins with the art itself, looking deeply at its content and the greater meanings that it might convey. We value conversation, exploration and discovery, without commercial goals.
Located in the San Francisco neighborhood of Noe Valley, Under the Willow is an exhibition space capable of a multiplicity of media - video, including multi-channel works, painting, sculpture and photography. Visitors are immersed in a private, dedicated indoor/outdoor art space that combines a white wall gallery with the simplicity of a home and garden. It is a place where participants engage in conversation about the Bay Area art scene and beyond and discover and unlock a passion for art collecting.
The main salon room is not a typical white cube; there are elements of comfort and domesticity. The ceilings are approximately 14 feet in height, imparting an awe-inspiring and airy, open feel. Rising 10 foot windows reveal the outside: a tranquil, minimally appointed split-level deck made from reclaimed redwood with a delicate and comfortable crushed seashell path. The deck and garden is surrounded by lush ferns and unique specimens, including Begonias with a bamboo-like quality, and a soft willow tree that inspired the name of the location.
Approximately four times per year Under the Willow hosts curated salons featuring work from galleries, artists and private collections.
